Challenge
The Client felt as if they had lost control of the quality of their own Website. The look–and–feel of the departmental sections was falling far outside of corporate standards due to the distributed content management solution (CMS) that was originally deployed. Content was piling up in various sections of the site, and the user experience was significantly compromised.
Solution
After an initial assessment of the site, stakeholders and IT, it was decided that a multi–phased approach covering creative and technology enhancements would be the most effective way to address the issues being experienced by the Client.
Phase 1 covered a creative audit, creation of corporate style–guide standards, and presentation of initial creative concepts for the revised Website look–and–feel. A series of technical meetings also took place with IT to discuss the current state of the CMS installation, uncover any potential issues and limitations of the system, and identify potential opportunities for governance enhancements as the new site was developed.
Phase 2 began with a regroup of the teams that allowed for a thorough review of proposed creative solutions that was validated against the capabilities of the CMS. Additional rounds of revisions were made to the creative, and a migration/launch schedule was developed that coordinated both creative and technology activities. Partnership with the Client’s IT team ensured that the CMS was re–architected with the added governance components agreed-upon as part of the creative redesign process.
Results
The new Website governance plan was well–received by the organization as a whole and praised for its ability to give them considerable flexibility with their site sections while being automatically “policed” by the system which kept them from accidentally adding pages, copy or graphics that would break the new standards. The site’s new creative design also garnered local recognition and awards for its ingenuity and style.
